Greve in Chianti

Greve in Chianti is considered the centre of Chianti and its hilly territory is one of the most picturesque in Tuscany, an alternation of olive groves, vineyards and woods, all crossed by roads lined with classic cypress trees.
The origins of Greve in Chianti date back to the early Middle Ages. The village of Greve developed over the years thanks to easy connections, including the Via Francigena and the Volterrana, which facilitated communication between Florence, Siena and the Valdarno. This is how the Greve ‘market’ was born. It was distinguished by its populous trading area and the presence of castles and churches, aristocratic villas and farms during the period of Florentine domination. At the end of the 14th century, noble families from Siena and Florence produced wine here.
Grand Duke Leopold dei Medici described the square in Greve as follows: ‘a beautiful square, where every Saturday the cattle and food market is held’. Still today, every Saturday the market is held where one can find fruit and vegetables, cheese, olives, interior decorations, flowers and clothes.
